Past and Present

Historically Stevenage was a very small town but after the Second World War a plan was put in place to develop a range of towns around London. Stevenage was chosen to be the first designated new town. Since then it has expanded rapidly and is now home to a vibrant and dynamic community which includes retail parks, leisure facilities and country parks.

The pedestrianised town centre provides a range of shopping opportunities but there are also a number of large retail parks to visit which include a fantastic selection of stores such as Mothercare, Laura Ashley and Debenhams.

There is no end of fun to be had at Stevenage Leisure Park which is home to not only a large cinema complex but also to an indoor golf range, a trampoline park and a bowling alley. Just next door is the popular Gordon Craig Theatre which hosts a wide range of shows and performances.

Whilst the centre of Stevenage is busy and lively it is only a short drive out to the peaceful Hertfordshire countryside. Here you can find a range of working farms, beautiful walks and of course the stunning Knebworth House. Knebworth House is well known for its outdoor concerts and also has a dinosaur park, a miniature train and a play fort for children to visit. Stevenage is also home to Fairlands Valley Park which has a boating lake set in 120 acres of stunning parkland.

Schooling

There are a wide range of primary schools available in the Stevenage area from smaller village style schools to larger town centre schools. A number of these have a ‘good’ Ofsted rating. Stevenage is also home to the popular John Henry Newman secondary school.
